My "apple"

Ok, thanks to my dear friend Matt in Seattle I am now aware that this is NOT an apple.

It is actually what is called a gall and is made by the oak apple gall wasp. No wonder I don't have more apples!

Here is a picture of one I found online. It looks just like mine.

This is what the inside looks like. Apparently the larva is in that middle core and it eats the strands while it grows.

So, definitely not an apple.
